OBITUARY OF MRS. J. L. HAMMOND; PASSED AWAY WED., AUG. 27Estella Margaret Hammond, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Miller, was born March 11, 1878 at Memphis, Missouri and died Aug. 27, 1924. She was the second child born to this union and the first the family to pass to the great beyond. In 1897 she was united in marriage with James L. Hammond, to which happy union two children were born. Mrs. Louise Crutcher and Mr. Samuel Hammond, both of this city. In 1890 she united with the Presbyterian Church at McAdow, the ministry of Rev. J. B. Lawrence, moved her membership to Presbyterian Church, Memphis, Missouri in 1896, and later joined Methodist Church, South with her family. Until her death she has remained an earnest, devoted Christian. Mrs. Hammond attended the Scotland County schools and was a graduate of the revered Memphis College, formerly located on the site still known to Memphis citizens as the College Hill. She leaves to mourn her death a husband, a daughter and a son; her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. H. Miller; one brother, Charles Miller; two sisters, Mrs. George Simon and Mrs. Chas. Johnson; all of Memphis, Missouri. A host of other relatives and friends, deeply regret the loss of this beautiful character. She was a woman pure and lovely. Harsh words from her lips were unknown; always was she so patient, gentle and considerate, quietly doing and giving to others. Her hopes, her aspirations, her determination overcome great difficulties, her power to endure, her long suffering with a smile, are but indicative of her unswerving faith in that "Omnipotent Power," whose follower has said, "Let not your heart be troubled, ye believe in God, Believe also in Me." Never did she inflict her gloom upon others but carried all her trouble to that secret place. Her very presence cast a ray of sunshine which penetrated every life with which she came in contact. Never was there a more devoted wife, mother, or sister. Her open broadminded intellect made her an amiable companion in her home; to the youth and to the aged.Loved by all who knew her she will live in the hearts of a host of friends and her influence will live beyond a realm indefinite. She will be missed, yet so comforting are the words:"Safe in the arms of Jesus,Safe on his gentle breast,There by his love o'ershadedSweetly my soul shall rest."Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church, Thursday afternoon, August 28, conducted by Rev. G. C. Schurman, pastor of the Christian Church, who delivered an appropriate and comforting sermon on Rev. 7:17, and assisted by Rev, E. M. Nesbitt, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, who read the Scripture and offered prayer, and the Presbyterian choir which beautifully rendered three of her favorite hymns, Abide with Me, My Jesus as Thou Wilt, and Some Sweet Day.The honorory [sic] pall bearers were Mrs. Porter Briggs, Mrs. Walter Scott, Mrs. H. F. Hendricks, Mrs. E. F. Bertram, Mrs. L. C. Pitkin and Mrs. J. V. Bumbarger. The pallbearers were Messrs. F. D. Mason, W. C. Pritchard, A. Ammerman, H. Wagner, W. Scott and T. C. Smith. The high esteem and affection in which she was universally held manifested in unmistakable ways by large numbers of her friends from all parts of the community and by numerous floral offerings from organizations and friends who loved her.The Memphis Reveille, Memphis, Missouri • Thu, Sep 4, 1924, Page 1, Column 1
