SAMUEL HAMMOND IS ACCIDENTALLY KILLEDMemphis people will be glad to know that the condition of R. D. Wilson is somewhat improved, according to his physician, Dr. A. E. Platter, just before The Democrat goes to press.Samuel Hammond, son of James L. Hammond was accidentally killed while duck hunting on a slough south of Memphis Sunday morning, November 6, at about 7:15. Hammond was killed when a charge from the gun of R. D. Wilson who was hunting with him struck him in the back of the head.Wilson and Hammond had gone hunting together on the slough which is about three quarters of a mile east of the George Monroe residence. They were in the duck blind at the time of the accident and were only about six or eight feet apart.A hawk flew over the blind and according to Wilson, Hammond told him to kill the hawk and the latter raised up in the blind and fired. What prompted Hammond to rise up at the same time Wilson fired will never, of course be known, but as Wilson fired he saw Hammond fall, and knew that he had been shot.Glancing at Hammond, and seeing that he was seriously injured, Wilson went to the Hammond car in which they had gone to the slough, and found that the latter had the keys to the car in his pocket.Wilson then ran the three quarters of a mile to the George Monroe home and told them to call a doctor. When Mr. Wilson reached the George Monroe home he was exhausted and Willis Monroe, son of George Monroe, notified Dr. Symmonds and others of the accident. He took Wilson in his car back to the blind where Monroe waded out and saw that Hammond was dead. He returned to Wilson where the two men waited until assistance arrived. In a very few moments Sheriff J. O. Myers and Dr. E. E. Symmonds arrived. The latter, waded out to the duck blind and examined Hammond and found that he had died instantly.Coroner E. E. Parrish was summoned as soon as it determined that Hammond was dead and he ordered the body removed to the Payne & Sons undertaking parlors.Mr. Wilson was taken to his home where he has since been under the care of a doctor. So great was the shock to Mr. Wilson that his hunting trip Sunday had ended so tragically the death of his friend and hunting companion that his condition is considered such that no one was allowed in the room to see him Sunday or Monday.According to Dr. Symmonds who examined the body, Hammond must have been in a semi-stooping position as the charge from the shotgun tore a place along the right shoulder of his hunting coat, through the collar, the edge of his cap, and into the base of Hammond's head. Hammond fell forward across his gun and it was in this position that Dr. Symmonds found him.No inquest was held at the slough, but Coroner Parrish ordered one held at his office Monday afternoon at 2. o'clock. A jury composed of P. R. Allen, T. S. Wilson, Paul Mathes, Willis Monroe, R. M. Morgan and Joe Creek was empanelled who returned the following verdict: "We the undersigned jurors empanelled to inquire into the death of Samuel Hammond, a resident of Memphis, on November 6, 1932, find after careful inquiry, that the said Samuel Hammond came to his death from a gunshot wound in the head fired from a gun in the hands of R. D. Wilson and we further find that gunshot wound was purely an unavoidable accident."Most of the men on the jury were at the scene following the tragedy Sunday morning, and deemed it entirely unnecessary either to call witnesses or to make inquiry of Mr. Wilson, who was at his home under a doctor's care, and unable to be at the inquest.Samuel Hammond was one of the best known young men of Memphis, having been employed in the Ford garage here for the past four years and previously to that had been employed in the Peoples Bank and a student in the Memphis high school. In his business activities he was always most pleasant with a cheery greeting and a pleasant smile for everyone. Everyone loved to do business with Sam and he will be sorely missed both in his home and to his associates in the Memphis Motor Company.Samuel Hammond was the son of J. L. and Estella Hammond and was born in Memphis, February 20, 1901, attended school here and lived in this county practically all of his life.He united with the Southern Methodist church and since its dissolution he has been a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church. In early boyhood he became an active member of the Boy Scouts and the order of DeMolay. During the past few years he has been a member of the Memphis Volunteer Fire Department and in this capacity he has served the people of Memphis faithfully.June 14, 1922 he was married to Miss Hazel Ellicott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Ellicott, of Memphis.Besides Mrs. Hammond he leaves his father, J. L. Hammond, sister, Louise Hammond Crutcher, grandmothers, Mrs. S. A. Hammond and Mrs. Wm. Miller and many other relatives and friends.Funeral services, were conducted Tuesday afternoon by Rev. C. M. Kennaugh, assisted by Rev. H. V. McColloch, of the Presbyterian church and Rev. J. N. Baker of the Christian church.Music. was furnished by a quartette from the Methodist church composed of Fian Oliver, J. J. Zumsteg, Fred Gerth and J. H. Watkins, who sang the same songs that were sung at the funeral services of Samuel's mother a few years ago. Mrs. Chas. Swift played the organ.Burial was in the Memphis cemetery. Pall bearers were Guy Oliver, A. L. Luther, J. B. Smoot. F. L. Wieland, L. F. Paul and J. Vic Smith, all of whom were close personal friends of Samuel. The Memphis Democrat, Memphis, Missouri • Thu, Nov 10, 1932Page 1, Columns 1 & 2
