W. H. MILLER, RESIDENT OF COUNTY 60 YEARS, DIED AT HOME, FRIDAYWilliam H. Miller, son of Samuel and Jeanetta Miller, was born on the homestead of his great-grandfather in Rockbridge county, Virginia, on April 2, 1843, and died at his home in Memphis, Missouri, December 3, 1926.In 1856, at the age of 12 years, he came with his parents to Scotland county, Missouri, where they settled on a farm four and half miles southwest of Memphis. It was on this farm that Mr. Miller continued to live until he removed to Memphis a few years since. In early manhood Mr. Miller made a profession of his faith in Christ under the pastorate of Rev. N. P. Willis and united with the First Presbyterian church in Memphis. Later he transferred his membership to the McAdow Presbyterian church in which he was elected an Elder and served in that official capacity until 1896 when he came he back the Memphis church in which to was also elected an Elder, serving until at his own request he was retired from active official service because of the increasing infirmities of years. He was married to Miss Harriett Jenkins on March 25, 1873, and when they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1923, an unbroken family circle was present. He is survived by his wife, one son, Chas. D. Miller, two daughters, Mrs. George Simon and Mrs. Chan Johnston, and six grand children. One daughter, Mrs. James Hammond was called home in 1924.Of his was seven brothers and sisters, two, John F. Miller and Miss Isabell Miller, died some years ago. The remaining five: Mrs. J. M. Neese, Mrs. A. P. Patterson and Messrs. James W. Miller, S. P. Miller all of Scotland county, and C. C. Miller of Clearfield, Iowa.Mr. Miller came of Scotch-Irish stock renowned throughout its history for frank piety and Christian courage; they and their kind were the men who won American independence, established Christian democracy in the Western continent, pushed out across the Alleganies [sic] and with their church and school won the west for Christ and America. He ran true to the type which he sprung, a man of faith and prayer, possessed of positive convictions on all matters, and having the courage of them all. As husband, brother, father and citizen he played well his part and left his impress and his influence. His devotion to his church was most marked, and during the years of his active life, his service was one of active consecration. He was pre-eminently a man of prayer and entered upon no project which he could not ask Gods blessing. Not more than fifteen minutes before his last earthly breath was drawn he asked his pastor with great earnesness [sic] for his final prayer and almost with its "Amen" his believing soul winged its way to the eternal shelter of his Heavenly Father's love. The following words spoken of member of his family circle by a former pastor, Dr. L. P. Bowen, are applicable as well to William Miller, "Oh, no; it would not be fair to hold the old folks back. They have borne the heat and brunt of the day; their hands have done their work; their feet grow feeble and weary; they are entitled to the rewards. We follow them to the brink; we honor them for what they have been and for what they have done." "'The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness." Isa. XV1,31."From the dust of the weary highway,From the smart of the sorrow's rodInto tde [sic] Royal presence,He was hidden as a guest of God.The vail from his eyes is taken,Sweet mysteries he is shown,His doubts and fears are over,For he knows as he is known."For him there should be rejoicing,And festival array,As for the bride in her beauty,Whom love hath takenSweet hours of peaceful waiting.Till the path that we have trod,Shall end at the Father's gateway,And we, too, are the guests of God."The Memphis Reveille, Memphis, Missouri • Thu, Dec 9, 1926, Page 1, Column 1
