Thomas W. BEVANS Obituary
Thomas W. Bevans, son of Ignatius and Ellen Cooksey Bevans, was born near Williamtown, December 22, 1865, and died at Fulton, Missouri., May 16, 1936. He had been in failing health for several years, and had been seriously ill the past nineteen months. He was the last of a family of nine children. He was married April 9, 1886, to Martha Johnson, of Memphis, Missouri. She died January 9, 1907. He then married February 19, 1908 Ruth E. Shick, [Note: should be Schick] of Keokuk, Iowa. To this union were born five children--Warren, Martha Helen, Jack M., Ray S., and Mary E. Mrs. Bevans died December 19, 1918. On June 1, 1920 he married Myrtle Heither. He leaves to mourn his death, his widow and five children; a foster son, Tom Riney; and two grandchildren. Mr. Bevans came to Canton in 1906. His business led him into contact with many people and he had a wide acquaintance. He was county assessor for eight years, ran a grocery store where the Birk store is located and was for twelve years traveling salesman for the Illinois Stock Feed Co. Except nineteen months in Quincy, he spent his whole life in Lewis County. He was a good man, a devoted husband and a kind and loving father. The funeral was held on Tuesday morning at 9:30 at St. Joseph's catholic church, Father P. J. Gannon officiating. Internment was in Forest Grove Cemetery, Canton, Missouri. Pallbearers were Abe Bevans, Earl Bevans, Jennings Bevans, John Be vans, Duard Speer, Luch Walker--all nephews. Present at the funeral were Jack M. Bevans, Ocean Park, Cal.; Mary E. Bevans, West Lawn, Iowa City, Iowa, --son and daughter of Mr. Bevans; Mr. and Mrs. V. L. Heither and daughter, Conesville, Iowa,--nephew of Mrs. Bevans. These could not be present: Warren Bevans, in Navy, Imperial Beach, Cal.; Ray S. Bevans, San Diego, Cal.; Martha Helen, New York City. Out-of-town attendants were: Mrs. Carrie Bevans, Abe Bevans and family, Duard Speer, Williamstown; Earl Bevans and family, John Bevans and family, Mr. and Mrs. Luch Walker, Monticello.
