MRS. A. P. PATTERSON DIEDWould Have Been 93 Years of Age Next Month, June 8Mrs. A. P. Patterson, whose critical illness was reported in The Democrat last week, passed away at her late home, 422 South Main street, last Wednesday afternoon, May 16, at 5:30 o'clock.Mrs. Patterson was one of the oldest residents of the county and was the widow of the late A. P. Patterson, pioneer dry goods merchant of Memphis, who was in that business for over 50 years and who was the oldest merchant in Memphis at the time of his death, December 8, 1920.Since the death of Mr. Patterson, Mrs. Patterson has lived at her home in Memphis with her daughters, who have tenderly cared for her during her illness, which has been of several months' duration. She was one of the last of the pioneer women of Memphis and came here long before there was much of a town. When the railroad was built through this county the right of way passed through their property and a deep cut was made between the Patterson and Broadwater properties -- two of the old families of Memphis.Mrs. Patterson was a splendid woman, she did much for charity and for those in distress when the community was young and there was much need for such work.Rebecca Ellen Miller was the Miller. daughter of Samuel and Jeanette She was born June 8, 1841, in Rockbridge county, Virginia, near Natural Bridge. She came with her parents to Scotland county, Missouri, March, 1856. Was married to Abraham P. Patterson near Memphis, May 21, 1863. Patterson, Alice Patterson, Bessie Patterson of Memphis; Mrs. E. G. Lyle of Kansas City and Frank J. Patterson of Edinburg, Texas. A daughter, Mrs. Grace Williams, died August 23, 1932, and one daughter died in infancy. She also leaves one brother, C. C. Miller of Bedford, Iowa, and seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. In a history of the membership of the local Presbyterian church, this is given on the life of Mrs. Patterson:"Mrs. Patterson was a pioneer of Scotland county. She was a faithful member of the Presbyterian church. One incident of her life speaks of her faithfulness to her church affiliation. In 1883 she, with her husband, who was then elder in the church, undertook the care and preparation of the communion service, providing the bread and wine for each occasion. After her husband's death, she continued this work, and while not able to do it herself, she always remembered the occasion and asked her daughters to see that it was done. She continued this service to the church for 51 years."She was a member of the Presbyterian church in Memphis for 72 years.Mrs. Patterson was one of the first members of the W. C. T. U. when it was organized in Memphis in June, 1884, and was still a member at the time of her death. For many years she edited the temperance column in the Memphis papers.Funeral services were held at her late home Saturday morning and were conducted by her pastor, Rev. Harry V. McColloch. Interment was in the Memphis cemetery.Mrs. N. P. McHenry and Mrs. J. S. Monroe sang, accompanied by Miss Ferol Eierman at the piano. The pall bearers were nephews: D. Miller, Hugh Miller, Frank Neese, J. S. Monroe, George Morrison and Edward Morrison. Those here from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Lyle and Edward F. Kansas City; Miss Jeanette Lyle, Topeka, Kansas; Gerald Lyle, Wabash, Ind.; Frank J. Patterson, Edinburg, Texas; and Miss Helen Moore, Columbia, Mo.The Memphis Democrat, Memphis, Missouri • Thu, May 24, 1934, Page 1, Column 1
