James Givens married Martha Allen in 1748 in Augusta County, VA and moved to KY ca. 1780. James and Martha named their oldest daughter, Deborah, for Martha's mother, Deborah Montgomery, first wife of Robert Allen. They named their second daughter, Sarah, for James' mother, Sarah (Cathey) Givens. They named their first son, Samuel, for James' father, Samuel Givens (1693-1740) and named their second son, Robert, for Martha's father, Robert Allen, of Frederick County, VA. In all they had 12 children.
