Thomas Poindexter - A Lot of Extra Information
French Protestant who left France to escape Papal rule and came to England. He had many children, one son was named Thomas.
In 1705, Thomas Poindexter was mentioned in the vestry book of Saint Paul's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia. By 1711, it appears that his widow had married James Brechin, since Brechin was listed as the person in control of land later (in 1719) listed under the control of Thomas Poindexter's eldest son, John Poindexter. Thomas apparently died between 1705 and 1710
From Poindexter Descendants Association:
Thomas is either the son of George 1 or George 2 as both are immigrants and early published material list him as "son of George Poindexter the immigrant".
Birthplace believed to be in area that is now Williamsburg, VA.
Thomas in St Peter's Parish records until 1702 and then shows up in St Paul's Parish records in 1705. In 1704 Thomas Poindexter charged with 550 acres.
Since Thomas's wife Sarah remarried Rev. James Breechin and the land is transferred to show this in 1711/1720. This clearly shows that Julius Caesar Poindexter is not the son of this Sarah but of another Sarah. Also that Thomas above had died before 1711.
Birth and death dates from A Poingdestre-Poindexter Genealogy, an Account of the Lineage of the Houston, Texas Branch of this Family, by John D Poindexter.
George, Thomas and Sarah are recognized by the National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century ( http://www.colonialdames17c.net/). Info from http://www.firstfamilies.org.
Poingdestre-Poindexter - A Norman Family Through the Ages 1250-1977- John Poindexter Landers and Richard Downs Poindexter pg. 94 Thomas POINDEXTER (III)
. . . was the son of George POINDEXTER (II). . .
He was born about 1675 at Middle Plantation (later Williamsburg on his grandfather's plantation (Criss Cross) of 850 acres. . .
The quit rent rolls for the County of New Kent (later that portion which became Hanover County) for 1702 show that Thomas POINDEXTER owned 1000 acres. We glean much interesting and invaluable information concerning Thomas POINDEXTER and his wife Sarah Crafford from a deposition made by his son Thomas POINDEXTER Jr. In the suit of SNEAD Vs. POINDEXTER in 1765. . . In the mentioned suit SNEAD vs. POINDEXTER in 1767 is the following: "John SNEAD & Susanna his wife & Executors of John POINDEXTER & others Hanover Co., Va. 5 Nov 1731 Sarah BRECHIN of St. Paul's Parish Hanover Co., Va. To her son John POINDEXTER for 64 L 10s 400 acres of land & three negroes Sarah, Nan & Bess, etc. . . . Thomas POINDEXTER married Sarah CRAFFORD, dau of David CRAFFORD of New Kent Co., Va. & had issue John POINDEXTER & since intermarried with James BRECHIN. . . Then in Louisa Co., Va. Will Bk. #1, p. 27 of 27 March 1753 we find the Will of Sarah BRECHIN - mentions nine children. John & Thomas POINDEXTER, William & James BRECHIN, Susanna SNEAD, Elizabeth SHRESBURY, Sarah RICE, Ann RUTHERFORD, Jean IRELAND, Thomas POINDEXTER & son-in-law John SNEAD, executors. . . 6. THOMAS POINDEXTER was born about 1675 in Middle Plantation, New Kent County, Virginia. (30)(31) Thomas may have been born several years earlier. Middle Plantation became Williamsburg. He died before 1707 in Hanover County, Virginia.(32) (33) Poindexter GEDCOM says Fredericksville Parish, Louisa Co VA There is no definite proof for Thomas being the son of George Poindexter. He is sometimes claimed to be son of George II. Circumstantial evidence exists however. His first three daughters were baptized at St. Peter's 10 years before any children of George Poindexter. His eldest daughter was Susanna. George Poindexter II's heir was George Poindexter which would not be if Thomas was his first born. The quit rent rolls for New Kent Co in 1702 show that Thomas Poindexter owned 1000 acres. 20 Jul 1738 he purchased 400 acres in Hanover Co, and 400 acres adjoining. 27 Sep 1739 bought 1000 acres in Hanover Co. 16 Aug 1752 patented 400 acres in Louisa Co. (The earlier tracts in Hanover Co may have been in that part which became Louisa Co in 1742.) He was married to SARAH CRAWFORD (daughter of DAVID CRAWFORD and JANE [CRAWFORD]) about 1695 in New Kent County, Virginia.(34) SARAH CRAWFORD (35) was born on 12 May 1666 in Amherst County, Virginia. (36) She died in 1753 in Louisa County, Virginia. (3) Louisa Co VA Will Book 1, p.27, 27 Mar 1753. Will of Sarah Brechin mentions all nine children including the four by her second husband James Brechin. Son-in-law John Snead is executor.
POINDEXTER Thomas Poindexter, son of George, married Sara Crawford, daughter of David Crawford, Sr., and had John Poindexter who had lands adjacent to Benjamin Brown and Barbary Winston in Hanover Co., VA. John Poindexter married Christian Gossage and had John Poindexter, Jr. whose daughters married Robert Cobbs and Charles Slaughter; another son of John was Joseph Poindexter whose son James married Mary Thomson and son William married Judith Thomson; both daughters of Waddy Thomson, Sr., son of David Thomson.
Note: Thomas was born about 1675 at Middle Plantation (later Williamsburg) on his grandfather's plantation of 850 acres. He was taken by his parents to New Kent Co. about 1680, where his grandfather built "Christ's Cross." There he was educated and grew up. About 1695 he married Sarah, the daughter of David Crawford, a prominent planter of New Kent County and a member of the House of Burgesses in 1692 and 1693. On May 21, 1691 David Crawford deeded 500 acres to his daughter Sarah.
They continued to live in New Kent County, which was renamed Hanover County. Thomas & Sarah were the parents of five children. Court records show that Thomas had died by 1706 or 1707, and Sarah married James Brechin.
The quit rent rolls for the County of New Kent (later the portion which became Hanover Co.) for 1702 show that Thomas Poindexter owned 1,000 acres. 20 Jul 1738 he purchased 400 acres in Hanover Co, and 400 acres adjoining. 27 Sep 1739 bought 1000 acres in Hanover Co. 16 Aug 1752 patented 400 acres in Louisa Co. (The earlier tracts in Hanover Co may have been in that part which became Louisa Co in 1742.)
A deposition made by his son Thomas Poindexter Jr. In the suit of Snead VS Poindexter in 1765 includes the following: "John Snead and Susanna his wife and Executors of John Poindexter & others Hanover Co., VA 5 Nov 1731 Sarah Brechin of St. Paul's Parish Hanover Co., VA To her son John Poindexter for 64L 10s 400 acres of land and three negroes, Sarah, Nan & Bess, Thomas Poindexter married Sarah Crafford, dau of David Crafford of New Kent Co., VA

Comment found on story:
Thomas may have been born several years earlier than the usually cited date of 1675 [I have even seen a birth as late as 1685] which in turn may have led to the "grandson" premise. I think a year of 1675 was probably someone's long ago estimate. His wife's father gave her land in 1691, likely in anticipation of a pending marriage. This alone would suggest her husband was born some years before 1675. Since men often married at about age 25 in this time period, Thomas could have easily been born as early as the mid 1660's, or some 15 years earlier than cited. In fact, Frances H. Casstevens, genealogist of Yadkin Co NC and the wife of a Poindexter descendant, in her self-published book, The Poindexter Family, Ancestry & Descendants of Thomas Poindexter of Surry (Yadkin) County North Carolina, 1992, p. 9, suggests a date of birth as 1664 which I have chosen to use here.
