Alfred the Great
In 1693, a remarkable discovery of a Saxon jewel was made near Athelney, known as the Alfred Jewel and housed in the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford. It is probable that it formed the crown of a writing instrument.
The Alfred jewel made of gold and enamel, bears the Anglo - Saxon inscription 'Aelfred mec heht gewyrgan' (Alfred had me made)
