Alice Moorman was brought to the colonies in 1637 by Captain Thomas Cornwallis, a member of the Executive Council of Maryland (Neill's "Founders of Maryland", page 78) presumably as one of a group of single "maidens."

Alice (Ann) Moorman was born about 1620 in England; she died sometime after 1667 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. She married Francis Gray, a carpentar and one of the first emigrants to Maryland. In 1637, he was already living at St. George's Hundred which he represented that year in the General Assembly of Maryland. He continued to represent St. George's until 1643.

Because of civil disturbances between Catholics and Protestants, several settlements were formed about 1638 on the south bank of the Potomac River (in Virginia) at Machodoc and Chicacoan. Francis Gray took an active role in these troubles against Lord Baltimore and finally found it more agreeable to permanently relocate to Virginia. He sold his cattle in Maryland in 1647. He relocated his family to Machodoc in Westmoreland County, Virginia where he patented 1000 acres along Rogers Creek on April 16, 1654.

Francis Gray died in Westmoreland County in 1667. His will, dated June 7, 1667 names his wife Alice, this son Francis Jr. (married Sarah Jones, eldest son named Nathaniel, died prior to 1687), and his daughter Ann (married William Rush, one son named William Jr).

The descendants of Alice (Moorman) and Francis Gray are known to have owned land in King George and Stafford counties in Virginia.

No kinship has been established between this Alice Moorman and Zachariah Moorman who settled in Nansemond County in southeastern Virginia in 1672.

Hope this helps.
