Mary [Willey] Tubbs is not interred in this yard [Old Cove Burying Ground] but her husband Samuel Tubbs is [fieldstone marked S T]. After his death in the spring of 1696, she returned to her native New London with her children and had all of them baptized in the 1st Church. In 1729 she was given a money donation towards her support as she was then in destitute condition. She lived in the Closed Cove part of New London and after her death about 1732, her 1/3 dower share was purchased by her grandson Samuel Beebe. She never returned to East Haddam, CT after she removed to New London.

Close Cove [cemetery] no longer exists as it was changed to Shaw's Cove and much of it has been filled in as the city of New London grew. Mary Tubbs would have to be buried in the "Ancient Burial Place" [Ancient Cemetery] which was quite close to her home. Since she was poor at the time she died, it was most likely that she never had a gravestone. Like many old burying grounds, most fieldstones were removed to accommodate easy mowing, thus a sad loss to history.
