Story about George Way

  • Name: George WAY
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 1619 in England 1
  • Death: 1690 in Saybrook, Middlesex Co., CT
  • Note: He came from Bristol, England, with his father and brothers (one was lost at sea). They arrived 8 Feb 1631, in the Lyon, commanded by Capt. Pierce. He was a Quaker who received a house right in Providence, RI 19 April 1645. After this he disappears fromm RI and probably shows up in Maine with his uncle in the promotion of Maine colonies. He was made a freeman 18 Feb 1661 and 1662 was appointed sergeant and served for 18 yrs. George Way could not write, and probably in his capacity as town sergeant, attempted to engage John Whipple Jr. to write a petition to the General Court complaining of William Hawkins Jr. and Mary Pray, wife of Richard, that they not be allowed to keep a house of entertainment or retail strong drink. Whipple did not have time, so advised Way to get Daniel Abbott to write it, which he did, as Whipple desposed 17 October 1674.
George was chosen with Richard {ray to see the highways repaired. On 20 November 1678 he reported that he had picked up a stray horse of a chestnut color, a white streak down his forehead, a slit on his left ear, having a sore on his right shoulder. As town sergeant he was regularly exposed to legal matters, but it was not until quite late in his life that he was appointed as a juryman. He served as a petty juryman 16 October 1678 and was sent to represent the town at the Council at Newport 15 November 1679. There is no evidence that he ever provided land or portions for his children. On the contrary, he seemed unable to hold onto any material estate, although it is possible that the sword found in his son George's inventory in 1717 had once belonged to the town sergeant. The children received some inheritance from their maternal grandmother.234
