William was drafted into the Civil War around 1865 for the Union Army under John F. Benjamin, and worked as a farmer in Miller Township.  He was a Master Mason, a justice of the peace of Scotland county for a number of years, and a member of the Baptist Church - he died in that faith on the 12th of December, 1887.
