"Jeremiah F. Jenkins, a well-known citizen of Jefferson Township, Scotland Co., Mo., was born in Bullitt County, Ky., November 11, 1811, and is the son of William N. and Priscilla B. (Hoskins) Jenkins. The father was born in Maryland, and followed the occupations of a farmer and a shoemaker. He moved to Kentucky at a very early date, 1806, and was quite successful in his business transactions. He died in Bullitt County, Ky. The mother of our subject was born in the same State, in which her husband was born, and died in the same State in which his death occurred. Our subject was two years old at the death of the father, the youngest of three children, two now living. He received a fair education in the common schools of Bullitt County, Ky., and being naturally a close observer, is considered one of the well-informed men of the county. He remained on the old homestead, and worked for his mother until 1836, when he married Mrs. Margaret Conley, daughter of John Craven, and the widow of Michael Conley. This excellent woman has been the companion of our subject for over fifty years, and their married life has been blessed by the birth of nine children--five sons and four daughters. One son is deceased. After marriage our subject purchased land in Bullitt County, Ky., and lived there about eleven years, when he moved to Scotland County, Mo., near Etna, in the year 1861, again purchased land near Memphis, Jefferson Township in 1863, and there he has since remained. He started in life poor, but evinced a strong determination to succeed, which he was successful. He now owns 240 acres of some of the best land in Scotland County. Our subject is a decided Democrat, is a member of the I.O.O.F., and he and wife are members of the Old School Presbyterian Church."
