Born in the Old Home at Valatie, New York. He settled in Troy, New York in 1853 where he remained until 1860 when he moved to Philadelphia. In 1901 he located to Vineland, on the S.W. corner of Main and Forest Grove Road, but a year or two later bought a property on Park Avenue, just east of the Paul Van Deusen place, eventually returning to Philadelphia in 1912. He became a Freemason at age 21, becoming Past Master, Past High Priest and historian of his lodge.
