Discussion On the Family Chadwick - Mentioning Jemima Chadwick

Source Text:

Mary,

I have a possible lead for you; I'm also a Chadwick descendant and have
been
researching the early Chadwicks of Barnstable County.

John Chadwick (1601-1681) and his wife Joan (--?--) (c1615-1674) were both
born in England, and married probably before 1645. He is supposed to have
arrived in Gov. Winthrop's fleet in 1630. They had several children born in
Malden, Middlesex Co., (Mass Bay Colony):

a daughter b. say 1646 (mentioned as married at the time of her father's
will in 1680)
John b. before 1648, d. in infancy in 1651
Elizabeth b. 1648 d. ? married Gershom Hills in Malden 1667
Sarah b. 1650 d. ? married Thomas Grover in Malden 1668
John b. 1651 d. 1707 in Bradford, MA married Mary Barlow in Cambridge in
1674
James b. 1653 d. ? married Hannah Butler in Malden in 1677
Samuel b. 1657 d. 1690 in Reading, married Mary Stocker in Reading in 1684
Hannah b. say 1660. (mentioned in 1680 in her father's will, unmarried in
1680)

John's will:
1st Day 10th month 1680, I John Chadwick senior of Malden... my will is
that
my two sons John and James shall have two thirds parts of all my land and
that they shall have their shares on that side which is next to their own
land. My son Samuel shall have the other third part to the Eastward with
the
house and orchyard. James and Samuel shall each of them pay five pounds
unto
my son John. In case any one of the said sons should die leaving no issue,
the land of his share shall be equally divided between the two sons that
are
surviving. I give unto my daughter Hannah all my cattle, bedding brass,
iron
and pewter, in a word all my moveables both within doors and without. After
debts and funeral & sickness expenses are discharged out of the profits or
income of my land orchyand and house that the whole profit of all my land
orchard and house shall be .. said daughter for the space of four years.
But
in case she should decease and have no issue surviving then my will ... all
that remans of her portion shall be equally divided between my three sons
John, James and Samuel. more over I bequeath unto my three daughters that
are already married by way of legacy ten shillings apiece to be paid by my
executor. I constitute my son John for my executor and I make ensig Thomas
Lynde and Thomas Skinner the overseers of this my will. witnesses ??
Jenkins
& Samuel ???

The son James is probably a good candidate for you. James' son Joseph was
married in Falmouth in 1709. James' daughter Jemima probably is the Jemima
Chadwick who married in Falmouth in 1712. James had a son Benjamin, and a
Benjamin married in Falmouth in 1722. I suspect that James may have removed
to Falmouth himself as his last child's birth was recorded in Malden in
1691. I see no other mention of him there. Did he move with his children to
Falmouth? Did he have Samuel there after 1691? James had a brother Samuel
(married to Mary Stocker) who died in Reading, Middlesex Co., MA on 26 Feb
1689/90. Perhaps James named his next son after this recently deceased
brother? There is an Ebenezer Chadwick living in Falmouth in the 1720's,
who's parents are also unknown. Another possible later child of James?
Ebenezer was probably born around 1700, as he was married in 1727 and his
wife gave birth to her last child in 1746, so she was possibly born about
1700. Another 'spare' Chadwick in Falmouth is mentioned in the Sandwich
VRs: "The Marriage between Joseph Laurance of Sandwich and Hannah Chaddack
of falmouth solemnized before Shearjashub Bourne Esqr Justice of Peace the
25th day of January 1699/700 ." Could this be Hannah, the daughter of John
&
Joan who was unmarried in 1680 in his will? Or could she be one of his
granddaughters? She had one son, in 1703, that I know of... named: Samuel,
but of course he was Samuel Lawrence.

The only (tenuous) evidence I have is that in 1701 the Falmouth town
records
have this: "The marck that James Chadwick give to his cretuers is a
mackrills Taill one the Right eare, Record in the yere 1701." This suggests
that perhaps James was resident in Falmouth by 1701. But there are no birth
or death records in Falmouth for Chadwicks that are early enough to cover
these folks...

Hope this gives you some ideas to follow.

Cheers,
Bobbie Hall
