Robert Hicks Van Deusen Military Service


Mexican border service in 1916 as private in Battery C, First Illinois Field Artillery.

Attended first officer's training camp at Fort Sheridan, 111., in the summer of 1917, and was commissioned Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery.

Went to France in the early fall of 1917 in the transport ''Kroonland."  Attended Saumur Artillery School during the first three months training course for American officers.

Joined 15th Field Artillery at Valdahon the latter part of December and transferred about January 10, 1918 to the 12th Field Artillery, which became part of the Second Division then being organized. Remained at Valdahon as Chief Instructor for the officers and men of "F" Battery in computation of firing data, conduct of fire, drill, etc., until about the middle of March when the regiment proceeded to the front in Les Eparges sector around Verdun.

Moved to the Chateau Thierry sector about June 1st and remained there until about July 15, then returned to Saumur Artillery School as division instructor in French 75 mm. field artillery.

Rejoined 12th Field Artillery, Dec. 1918 in Germany and remained there with the regiment in and around Rheinbrohl and Honningen until about June i, 1919.

Returned to the United States and was mustered out, July, 1919 at Camp Dix.

Was promoted in the fall of 1918 to rank of First Lieut. Field Artillery, and was cited in Second Division orders while in the Chateau Thierry sector in June 1918.
