Phyllis MacGillivray - Tillamook Headlight Herald
Phyllis MacGillivray, 85, died of a stroke Nov. 18 after battling diabetes for 30 years.
Phyllis was born May 26, 1924, in St. Petersburg, Penn., to John Guy Miller and Cecilia Mary (Hall) Miller. Her childhood and young adult years were spent in Pennsylvania.
She ventured west to Seattle with a girlfriend, where she met and later became engaged to the love of her life, Robert MacGillivray. The couple married in Oil City, Penn., on May 7, 1949.
Phyllis worked for Dr. Forrest Bump in Forest Grove while her husband attended optometry school at Pacific University.
In 1956, they bought an optometric practice in Tillamook and made their home there.
Phyllis worked as a bookkeeper for her husband's optometric practice and as a homemaker while raising their two children.
She later owned and operated Rocky Talk gift shop with her mother, Cecilia (Mamie) Miller.
Phyllis was a longtime member of the Tillamook chapter of Sweet Adelines, singing competitively in a quartet and with the chorus.
She was a member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Tillamook, where she volunteered in various capacities over the years.
Phyllis lived life with the glass half-full. She was cheerful and kind to others, and to animals. She was intellectual and was her own person, acting with courage and fortitude.
Phyllis is survived by sister Jean Lenser of Ohio; brother John Miller of Florida; daughter Bonnie MacGillivray and husband Craig Batemen of Portland; son Bill MacGillivray and wife Nancy of Portland; granddaughter Michelle Niktab and husband Ian; and grandson Grant MacGillivray.
Phyllis loved flowers. She also supported the Humane Society, St. Alban's, the Tillamook County Library and the Tillamook YMCA. Donations can be made in her memory and will be greatly appreciated.
A memorial service will be held Nov. 28 at 11 a.m. at St. Alban's. A private inurnment will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
